[ARCHIVED] Bentonville Public Art Advisory Committee to Unveil New Art Installation at City Hall

Artwork Unveiling

Bentonville, AR, November 2, 2023 – The City of Bentonville’s Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) is pleased to announce the permanent installation of Seeds of Bentonville by artist Justin Deister in front of City Hall. A public unveiling of this artwork work celebrating Bentonville’s Sesquicentennial will be held at City Hall, 305 SW A St., at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023. Guest speakers at the unveiling of Seeds of Bentonville will include artist Justin Deister and Mayor Stephanie Orman. It will be followed by photo and interview opportunities.

Seeds of Bentonville” is a sculptural apple slice with 150 seeds representing Bentonville’s 150 years of incorporation. By 1873, Benton County was one of the largest apple-producing counties in the nation. The apple slice represents the more than 40,000 acres of apple orchards in the area at that time. Making the connection between then and now, each seed contains a word that describes Bentonville today. These 150 descriptive words were provided by Bentonville residents at several events over the summer of 2023 for incorporation into this piece.

Deister, who is from Louisville, Colorado, is a graphic designer with a BFA in Graphic Design from Missouri State University and an MFA in Communication Arts & Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has more 14 public art installations across the country.

Earlier this year, the PAAC issued a Request for Proposals for Artwork that will celebrate Bentonville’s sequential in 2023. The committee selected Deister’s proposal out of 19 received.

We want to thank the Bentonville Street Department for preparing the foundation for Seeds of Bentonville as well as members of the community who contributed words for the seeds.

Seeds of Bentonville is the 19th permanent or temporary work introduced through PAAC. In partnership with Visit Bentonville, OZ Art NWA, Crystal Bridges, and the Momentary more than 130 public artworks contribute to making Bentonville a premier cultural destination.

The City of Bentonville established a public art policy and PAAC in 2007 to facilitate art in “successful and engaging public spaces of distinctive character, where citizens will encounter works of public art that will surprise and delight with artwork that celebrates the city’s history, its entrepreneurial spirit, and growing diversity.”

PAAC committee members are appointed by the mayor and approved by Bentonville City Council. The committee is responsible for:

  • Serving in an advisory capacity to the council for recommending artwork to be placed on public property;
  • Providing technical advisement on the development of a public art program;
  • Following the adopted Public Art Policy for the City of Bentonville.
