Bentonville, AR...The Bentonville Electric Utility Department will serve as host for the 2023 MESO Lineworkers Rodeo on Thursday, September 14.
“Imagine the professional lineworkers who keep your lights on competing in a series of individual and team events,” said Travis Matlock, PE, Bentonville Electric Utility Director. “In addition to the competition, this event is a great opportunity to showcase our community.
Lineworker Rodeos are a tradition at electric utilities across the country. In the spirit of friendly competition, professionals come together to demonstrate skills and knowledge. Lineworkers of all experience levels – journeymen and apprentices – gather in a safe environment to gain valuable experience.
Events include Hurtman Rescue where competitors are required to simulate a real-life event where someone is hurt on top of a utility pole. The Speed Climb is a crowd favorite where competitors are judged by both speed and safety.
Competitors who do not work together are teamed up for the Mutual Aid Events. These events are beneficial in the event of a municipality dispatching crews to help another utility restore power after an emergency or severe weather situation.
The annual MESO Lineworkers Rodeo attracts attendees from municipalities across Oklahoma and the region. This event is unique because it includes important safety training to enhance the event. In addition to rodeo competitors, we draw leaders from many locally owned, municipal utilities.
More than 40 competitors are expected to compete along with dozens of volunteers and judges who will be in attendance.
All activities begin at 8 a.m. at 309 NE J Street. Questions about the event may be directed to Ty McCoy at tymccoy@bentonvillear.com or Lance Henderson at lhenderson@bentonvilear.com.
The event is sponsored by the Grand River Dam Authority, Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority, and Visit Bentonville.
