Bentonville, AR… Mayor Stephanie Orman has officially proclaimed the month of May 2024 as “National Drug Court Month” in the City of Bentonville, Arkansas, in recognition of the transformative impact of Treatment Courts on individuals and families battling substance use disorders.
Treatment Courts have been at the forefront of justice reform for over three decades, serving as a critical component in combating substance abuse and crime. With more than 4,000 treatment courts nationwide, this approach has become the cornerstone of a significant shift in the criminal justice system, addressing the underlying issues contributing to criminal behavior.
Since their inception, Treatment Courts have served over 1.5 million individuals, with research indicating that they reduce crime and improve substance use treatment outcomes more effectively and at a lower cost than other criminal justice strategies. On average, Treatment Courts save $6,000 for every individual they serve. These savings are realized through reduced incarceration rates, lower crime rates, and better treatment outcomes.
The City of Bentonville has been a proud supporter of Treatment Courts, with its DWI Court program now in its 13th year. To date, the program has had 63 participants and 30 graduates, with graduates collectively completing over 600 hours of treatment. These graduates represent real success stories in the fight against addiction, showcasing the benefits of Treatment Courts in promoting education, employment, housing stability, and family reunification.
Treatment Courts represent more than just a shift in criminal justice philosophy; they bring together a wide array of community stakeholders, including public safety and public health professionals, in a collaborative effort to combat addiction and crime. These courts demonstrate that when one person rises out of addiction and crime, the entire community benefits.
