Bentonville, AR… In recognition of the National League of Cities' centennial anniversary and its enduring commitment to serving local governments across the United States, the City of Bentonville has proclaimed May 2024 as National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month. This proclamation reflects the City's deep appreciation for the pivotal role that local governments play in the fabric of American democracy.

Mayor Stephanie Orman, in issuing the proclamation, highlighted the significant impact the National League of Cities (NLC) has had on municipalities nationwide since its founding in 1924 in Lawrence, Kansas. The NLC, originally established as the American Municipal Association, has grown into the oldest and largest organization representing over 19,000 cities, towns, and villages throughout the United States.

"Local governments are the bedrock of American democracy, providing 336 million residents with the most accountable, responsive, inclusive, ethical, and transparent government in the world," Mayor Orman stated. "We're proud to be part of the National League of Cities, an organization that has worked tirelessly to champion federal legislative solutions that support municipalities, and that has played a crucial role in driving innovation and supporting local leadership."

Mayor Orman continued by noting the many ways Bentonville has benefited from its membership in the NLC. "Through the NLC's research, technical expertise, and federal advocacy, we've been able to strengthen our local government and learn from our peers across the country. This month, we join cities, towns, and villages nationwide in celebrating the legacy and impact of the National League of Cities," she said.

The proclamation encourages all residents to participate in the celebration, recognizing the essential contributions of America's local governments and acknowledging the National League of Cities' century-long dedication to supporting and advancing municipal interests.
