Bentonville, AR… Mayor Stephanie Orman has officially proclaimed the week of May 12-18, 2024, as "Police Week" in Bentonville, Arkansas, to honor the brave law enforcement officers who serve and protect the community. This week-long observance coincides with National Police Week, a time when the nation recognizes the courage and sacrifice of law enforcement professionals.
There are over 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Bentonville Police Department. These officers put their lives on the line daily, and every year approximately 60,000 assaults are reported, resulting in injuries to more than 16,000 officers.
Since the first recorded death in 1786, over 25,000 officers in the United States have been killed in the line of duty. This somber statistic includes one member of the Bentonville Police Department, who was tragically killed in 1997. To honor their sacrifice, the names of these fallen heroes are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. In 2024, the names of 137 officers killed in 2023 will be added to the memorial.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, held on the evening of May 13, 2024, serves as a poignant tribute to the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. This vigil is a central part of National Police Week, observed from May 12-18, 2024, and draws thousands of attendees, including law enforcement families and supporters.
May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, during which U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff in honor of fallen officers and their families.
In recognition of the significant contributions of law enforcement officers, Mayor Stephanie Orman has proclaimed the week of May 12-18, 2024, as "Police Week" in Bentonville. The Mayor invites the community to join in acknowledging the service and sacrifice of these officers and to participate in activities and events that celebrate their dedication.
Mayor Orman stated, "Our law enforcement officers are the backbone of public safety in Bentonville. They serve with courage, commitment, and compassion. This week is an opportunity for our community to express gratitude for their unwavering service and to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty."
