BENTONVILLE, AR...Stephanie Orman, Mayor of the City of Bentonville, presented a Proclamation celebrating February 2019 as “National African American History Month” at Bentonville Public Library on Wednesday, February 6 at 1 p.m.

Members of the Library Advisory Board were present to receive the proclamation that stated in part, “The contributions African Americans have made and continue to make are an integral part of our society, and the history of African Americans exemplifies the resilience and innovative spirit that continue to make our Nation great….”

Book displays of library materials for children, teenagers, adults and families are centrally located in the Library along with the City’s Proclamation. Featured library resources that celebrate diversity and honor African Americans include biographies on African Americans and Coretta Scott King Book Award titles that, according to the American Library Association website, honor “outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.”

On Saturday, February 23 at 2 p.m. in the Children’s Read Aloud area of Bentonville Public Library, members of Northwest Arkansas Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will present Black History Month Storytime. The group has collaborated with BPL to offer this special storytime for community families the last several years. This storytime will honor the musical traditions of the African American community with works illustrated by Ashley Bryan, E.B. Lewis and Kadir Nelson.
